Health Promoting Schools

The Health Promoting School framework consists of three domains: teaching and learning, school environment, culture and organization, partnerships, supports, and services. This framework is intended to facilitate discussion among school, health, and nongovernmental sectors and to support the school system in developing policies and practices that create and maintain school environments that promote children’s health. Halifax Regional School Board health-related policies include:

Food and Nutrition Policy for Nova Scotia Public Schools: This policy is a result of a strong partnership between Nova Scotia Department of Health Promotion and Protection and the Nova Scotia Department of Education. The policy is meant to increase access to and enjoyment of health promoting , safe and affordable food and beverages served and sold in Nova Scotia public schools. The policy strives to make the healthy choice the easy choice in the school setting.

Halifax Regional School Board, Policy B.013 Regional Code of Conduct

Halifax Regional School Board, Policy B.019 High School Attendance

The Health Promoting School framework continues to pose questions that can be used to facilitate discussion among education, health, and non-government sectors. This will prompt action that leads to improving policies and practices to support the health and learning of all children and youth.
