Health Promoting School LEADERS
Since 2006, the Departments of Education and Health Promotion and Protection make funds available to assist schools in the Halifax Regional School Board to become Health Promoting Schools. During the 2009-2010 school year the following schools received funding support for a variety of initiatiives click here.
The Our Healthy School Steering Committee includes representatives from health, education, community organizations (government and non-government) as well as members of the Halifax Regional School Board’s Health Promotion Team, working in partnership to improve the wellbeing of students and staff throughout the Halifax Regional School Board.
The HRSB Health Promotion Team offers various resources throughout the year, to help schools’ link health promotion with school improvement – targeting school goals in planning for improvement.

A health promoting school (HPS) strives to nurture the social, emotional, physical and overall wellbeing and cognitive development of its students, staff and community. A health promoting school is a place where all members of the school community work together to provide students with integrated, positive experiences and structures which promote and protect their health.
The concept is about reinforcing the skills & knowledge taught through the curriculum and providing consistent messages through other aspects of schooling, such as the school environment or ethos and community partnerships. The most successful school health promotion initiatives use this whole of school or health promoting school approach.
