Thanks to a Health Promoting School Grant,

Middle School is now presenting “Fun Food Fridays.” By providing interesting food samples for students to test during the lunch hour, this project is an excellent example of support for the new Food and Nutrition Policy for NS Public Schools.
Family Studies Teacher, Ms. Julie LeBlanc interviewed and “hired” students to prepare, cook, and serve in the cafeteria during the school’s two lunch hours. The students also clean up and write a reflection on their experience. Last month’s food samples included spaghetti squash, jicama salad, Asian pears, yellow watermelon, and pluots (a cross between a plum and a nectarine).

The school has also developed a unique partnership with the staff at Pete’s Frootique in Sunnyside. Pete’s Registered Dietitian has been a great help for students in making healthy selections as well as providing interesting information about their food choices from around the world.
On Friday, November 24th, invited special guests and the media are asked to join in the sampling of student food choices. Invited guests include the Minister of Health Promotion and Protection, the Honourable Barry Barnet, HRSB Superintendent Carole Olsen, and Deborah Brunt, District 11 School Board Member.
